Method
Prepare the Beans
- Rinse and soak the navy beans in water overnight. Drain and set aside.
Cook the Beans
- In a Dutch oven, combine soaked beans, chopped onion, minced garlic, and water. Bring to a boil.
- Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 2 hours until beans are tender.
Make the Sauce
- In a bowl, mix together ketchup, brown sugar, molasses, mustard powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper.
Combine and Bake
- Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C). Stir the sauce into the beans, cover, and transfer to the oven.
- Bake for 1.5 to 2 hours, stirring occasionally, until thickened and bubbly.
