Ingredients

Dough
  • 2 cups All-Purpose Flour Choose a high-quality brand for best results.
  • 1/2 cup Butter Use unsalted butter for a rich flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Just a pinch enhances the overall taste.
  • 1 large Egg For egg wash.
  • 1/4 cup Cold Water Helps bind the dough together.
Filling
  • 1 cup Ground Meat or Vegetables Beef, chicken, or sautéed veggies work well.
  • 1 medium Onion Finely chopped, sauté until translucent.
  • 2 cloves Garlic Fresh minced for enhanced aroma.
  • 1 teaspoon Spices (Cumin, Paprika) Adjust amounts based on heat tolerance.
  • 1/2 cup Cheese (Optional) Feta or mozzarella can elevate flavors.
  • 1/4 cup Sour Cream or Sauce For serving.

Method

Prepare the Dough
  1. Mix flour and salt in a large bowl. Gradually add cold water and melted butter until the mixture forms a soft dough. Knead for about 5 minutes until smooth, then cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.
Make the Filling
  1. In a skillet over medium heat, sauté chopped onions until they become translucent and fragrant, about 5 minutes. Add your choice of protein or vegetables, cooking until browned. Season generously with salt, pepper, and herbs.
Roll Out the Dough
  1. Divide the dough into small balls about the size of a golf ball. On a floured surface, roll each ball into thin circles, roughly 6 inches in diameter.
Assemble the Empanadas
  1. Place a spoonful of filling on one half of each dough circle. Carefully fold the other half over to create a pocket. Press edges together firmly, using a fork to crimp and seal them tightly.
Bake or Fry
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F for baking or heat oil in a deep pan for frying. If baking, arrange empanadas on a lined baking sheet and brush with egg wash. Bake for 20-25 minutes or fry until golden brown.
