  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 3 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 cup buttermilk (room temperature)
  • 1 cup coconut flakes (sweetened or unsweetened)
  • 1 cup chopped toasted pecans
  • 4 oz German sweet chocolate bar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time.
  4. Mix in the buttermilk and melted chocolate until smooth.
  5. Combine the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients until just mixed.
  6. Divide batter between prepared pans and bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
