Description

Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Purple gel food coloring
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two greased and lined 9-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Cream the softened butter and sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy (about 3-4 minutes).
  4. Add the eggs one at a time followed by the vanilla extract; mix until smooth.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
  6. Stir in purple food coloring until your desired shade is achieved.
  7. Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Cool cakes in pans for about 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
